Student Personalized Spelling Lists

May 10, 2015 By

Are you looking for a simple and effective method to improve your students’ spelling? Why not try personalized spelling lists? Since I have implemented this system, my students’ spelling has come on in leaps and bounds. Not only are they so simple and and quick to make, but my students also love using them. I wanted a system which picks up and corrects student errors and prompts them to use (and remember) the correct spelling in the future. I love using this system which is personal to each student.

In each of my students’ work books I stick a sheet of card which flips outwards. This can be folded back over so the book can be closed and stored away neatly. Whenever a student spells a word incorrectly in their writing, I write the correctly spelt word on the flip out card. If a student asks me to spell a word for them, I write it onto the card. I do not let the students write on the card, only myself or my teaching assistant. The great thing is that the student is able to write in their book whilst the card is flipped out, so they are able to refer to the words whilst writing. As they skim down their list, they are also reading and re-reading any words they have spelt wrong in the past. This further reinforces the correct spellings for each student.

How to make personalized spelling lists:

The spelling lists are super easy to make. All you need is a piece of card, sticky tape and your student’s workbook. Here are five simple steps to make your own personalized spelling lists for your students.
